Cindy Sherman : The Early Works 1975 - 1977, Catalogue Raisonné

description

Large-scale catalogue raisonné by Gabriele Schor of the work of Cindy Sherman from 1975 - 1977. Includes an annotated list of exhibitions and a selected bibliography. "For more than thirty years, Cindy Sherman (Born 1954 in Glen Ridge, New Jersey) has been visualizing a diverse range of role models and female identities. Even as a teenager, the artist loved to transform herself by dressing up. Contrary to popular view, the famous 'Untitled Film Stills' (1977 - 1980) are not her earliest works; these were preceded by pictures that she took in Buffalo between 1975 and 1977. During these years, Sherman developed playing with disguises into an artistic concept, creating photographs that unite a remarkable number of theatrical elements and which have remained largely unknown until now. Using a variety of wigs, makeup, gestures, expressions, and costumes, Sherman reveals different social identities by playing various roles. Gabriele Schor, director of the collection SAMMLUNG VERBUND, worked closely with the artist to research the conceptual beginnings of Sherman's oeuvre, now presented in this catalogue raisonné. The book is a collaboration between Cindy Sherman, SAMMLUNG VERBUND, and Metro Pictures." --publisher's statement.
