description

Single-sided flyer published as solicitation for art to be included in the People''''s Flag Show held November 9 - 14, 1970. "As a challenge to the repressive laws governing so-called flag desecration, concerned artists and citizens are asked to participate in an exhibition of flag works, to open with a symposium on repression, on Nov. 9th, 1970..." -- from flyer''''s text.

Three artists were arrested last night and charged with desecrating the flag after a raid the "People''''s Flag Show" at Judson Memorial Church, 55 Washington Square South.

The artists, whose works appeared among 100 in the show, were identified as Faith Ringgold, 36 years old, of 345 West 145th Street; Jean van Imschoot, 38, who uses the name Jean Toche, of 730 Bay Street, and John [sic.] Hendricks, 31, of 325 State Street, both of Brooklyn.

They were arraigned before Judge Louis J. Schriffin in Night Court and released in their own recognizance for a hearing Dec. 1.

The flag display, which opened Monday, was organized to show sympathy for Stephen Radich, a New York art dealer convicted in 1967 of violating a state law against desecration of the flag in a show he spon sored. That case is under appeal before the United States Supreme Court.

After last night''''s raid, sponsors of the show said it would not be open today because further arrests had been threat ened. -- from "3 ARRESTED IN RAID ON FLAG ART SHOW," in The New York Times, November 14, 1970.
