Riva Castleman

A Century of Artists Books

description

Exhibition catalogue published in conjunction with show held October 23, 1994 - January 24, 1995. Text by Riva Castleman. Large-scale catalogue documenting not artists' books but rather livre d'artiste or livre de peintre style publications. The exhibition dwells on highly produced books by such artists as Josef Albers, Pierre Alechinsky, Jean Arp, Geneviève Asse, Enrico Baj, Georg Baselitz, Leonard Baskin, Aubrey Beardsley, Max Beckmann, Hans Bellmer, Joseph Beuys, Mel Bochner, David Bomberg, Pierre Bonnnard, Louise Bourgeois, Constantin Brancusi, Georges Braque, Marcel Broodthaers, Edward Burne-Jones, Alexander Calder, Marc Chagall, Marc Chagall, Eduardo Chillida, Francesco Clemente, Tullio d'Albisola, Salvador Dali, Giorgio de Chirico, Henri de Chirico, Nicholas de Staël, Robert Delaunay, Sonia Delaunay-Terk, André Derain, Jim Dine, Jean Dubuffet, Marcel Duchamp, Raoul Dufy, André Dunoyer de Segonzac, Max Ernst, Walker Evans, Jean Fautrier, Antonio Frasconi, Paul Gauguin, Alberto Giacometti, Juan Gris, George Grosz, David Hockney, Howard Hodgkin, Robert Indiana, Marcel Janco, Alfred Jarry, Jasper Johns, Asger Jorn, Vasily Kandinsky, Ellsworth Kelly, Anselm Kiefer, Oskar Kokoschka, Barbara Kruger, Wifredo Lam, Henri Laurens, Fernand Léger, El Lissitzky, Ernst Ludwig Kirchner, Aristide Maillol, Kasimir Malevich, Frans Masereel, Henri Matisse, Matta, Henri Michaux, Joan Miró, László Moholy-Nagy, Henry Moore, William Morris, Robert Motherwell, Bruno Munari, Paul Nash, Mimmo Paladino, Eduardo Paolozzi, Jürgen Partenheimer, A.R. Penck, Pablo Picasso, Robert Rauschenberg, Man Ray, Odilon Redon, Larry Rivers, Dieter Roth, Georges Rouault, Olga Rozanova, Robert Ryman, Kurt Schwitters, Kurt Seligmann, Ben Shahn, Judith Shea, Yves Tanguy, Antoni Tàpies, Günther Uecker, Henry van de Velde, Jacques Villon, Not Vital, Andy Warhol, and Wols. Whereas contemporary artists such as Edward Ruscha, Sol LeWitt, Gilbert & George, Carl Andre, Robert Barry, Douglas Huebler, Joseph Kosuth, Robert Morris, and Lawrence Weiner receive only fleeting, perhaps grudging, inclusion. Other contemporary artists are ignored, or worse. So the title of the book is a misnomer, the contents are myopic, and the text is thin. However, it does deal with pre-1960s deluxe publications well enough, and luxuriously enough, that the book remains worthwhile in terms of documenting that aspect of artistic bookmaking.
