The Alife Shop at Deitch Projects

description

Single sided card / announcement published in conjunction with show held December 14, 2002 - February 15, 2003.

Deitch Projects presented a joint project with Alife, an installation featuring products by sixty artists. The 76 Grand Street storefront was reconfigured with floor-to-ceiling vitrines to display the works. Since 1999, the downtown Manhattan creative collective Alife has been instrumental in promoting young artists, bringing their work and influences to the commercial environments of retail and manufacturing. Alife owned and operated the Alife shop at 178 Orchard Street, Alife Rivington Club at 158 Rivington Street, and ALIFECREATIVE agency, a full-service creative studio.

Keith Haring''''s Pop Shop was an inspiration for the Alife store and this generation of artists. An exhibition of drawings by Haring, Pop Figuration, ran in the main space concurrently with the Alife show. The generation of artists that participated in Alife at Deitch Projects were committed to creating art in the form of products that can be distributed widely and sold inexpensively. As artist Ryan McGinness proclaimed, "Products are the new art."

Participating artists were: Alleged/Aaron Rose, Andrew Kuo, Arkitip/Scott Andrew Snyder, Banksy/Stephen Earl, Beat13/Lucy, Bounty Hunter/Taka, Brendan Fowler, Champion Graphics/Geoff McFetridge, Clayton Patterson, Craig Costello, Dan Murphy, David Ellis, Deanne Cheuk, Derrick Hodgson/MDRL, Doze, Dynamo/Keith and Alisa Dynamo, Ed Templeton, Eric Haze, Faile/Patrick McNeil, Galaxia, Greybull Press, HUGA/Green Lady, JD, Jen Larkin/Props, Joseph Ari Aloi, Kami, Kaws, Keegan McHargue, Kostas Seremetis, Maharishi, Mark Gonzales, Matt McCormick, Michael Lau, Mike-Mint, Monsterism/Rob Manley, Neverstop/Caterina deCarlo, Nov, Perks and Mini, Relax, Ricky Powell, Rob Jest, Rookie, Rostarr, Ryan McGinness, Sasu, Shepard Fairey, Space Invader, SSUR, Stash, Stephen Powers, Suckadeli/Morgan Phillips, Surface 2 Air, Todd James/Reas, Tokion, Tommy Guerrero, Toy Group 360, Travis Millard, Twist, WK, and Young Kim.
