Vol. 1 : Mannerism to Romanticism

Nikolaus Pevsner, Uvedale Price, Richard Payne Knight, Humphry Repton

description

First volume in a two-volume survey of art, architecture, and design by Nikolaus Pesvner. First volume looks at Mannerism to Modernism. "The publication of two substantial volumes of his essays - representing more than thirty years of research and original thinking - is therefore an event of the first importance, not only for the scholar but for the general public as well. The scope of Professor Pevsner's knowledge and perception is indicated here by the variety of subjects covered, and the clarity and thoroughness of each discussion show how well deserved is his reputation as a leading art historian. The first part of this volume comprises three papers on Italian Mannerist and Baroque painting, tracing the close connections between art and ideas, between style and its religious background. These were pioneer studies written in the 1920s before Professor Pevsner left Germany. They have never before been published in English. The second section, 'Romanticism and Classicism,' examines the growth of the Picturesque movement in England - a movement crucial to the rest of Europe in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. Selections from three influential writers - Uvedale Price, Richard Payne Knight, and Humphry Repton - bring the period to life. In the last four essays the theme is the past seen through the eyes of the present: the 'neo-Jacobean' on the eighteenth century, Goethe's views on medieval and classical architecture, the work of Schinkel (an architect not yet properly appreciated), and finally, two long and fascinating investigations into the Doric and Egyptian revivals int he late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries." -- from interior flap. Includes notes, list of illustrations, and index. Printed in black-and-white, with 267 illustrations.
