description

Exhibition is noted in the catalogue's forward that this was the "first American museum exhibition devoted to a survey of works and attitudes that have come to be known as Bodyworks." Text by Licht, index of works presented. Includes Vito Acconci, Eleanor Antin, Ben Vautier, Joseph Beuys, Günter Brus, Chris Burden, Marcel Duchamp, Gilbert & George, Ross Hamilton and Curtis Fisher, Peter Hutchinson, Urs Lüthi, Robert Morris, Bruce Nauman, Dennis Oppenheim, Gina Pane, Adrian Piper, Arnulf Rainer, Klaus Rinke, Lucas Samaras, Rudolf Schwarzkogler, Alan Sonfist, William Wegman. This show also incorporated videotapes and performances by Acconci, Oppenheim, Laurie Anderson, and Burden. Burden's performance, which took place at MCA on October 3, 1971, was "I Became a Secret Hippy." Burden's notes after the work: "The piece began when I took off my clothes, jeans and a t-shirt, and lay on the floor on my back. A friend hammered a star shaped stud into my sternum. Then I sat in a chair and had all my hair cut off. Finally I dress in some F.B.I. clothes I bought for the piece." -- Chris Burden, in "Chris Burden : 71 - 73."
