The Nutshell Studies of Unexplained Deaths

description

"Acclaimed photographer Corinne May Botz offers an extraordinary glimpse into the mind of a master criminal investigator. Frances Glessner Lee, a wealthy grandmother, founded the Dept. of Legal Medicine at Harvard and was later appointed captain in the New Hampshire state police. In the '40s and '50s, she built stunningly detailed dollhouse crime scenes based on real cases to train detectives to assess visual evidence. In creating the Nutshells, Lee co-opted the feminine tradition of delighting in miniatures and dollhouses for decidedly unfeminine, scientific purposes. The models expose the dark side lurking beneath seemingly serene American homes of the 1940s." -- from interior flap. Essay and photography by Botz. Features profuse color illustrations as well as diagrams accompanying the different scenarios.
