Claes Oldenburg : An Exhibition of Recent Erotic Fantasy Drawings

description

Exhibition catalogue published in conjunction with show held November 4 - December 6, 1975. Essay by Richard Morphet. Includes fourteen full-page reproductions of Oldenburg's erotic drawings from the exhibition plus an exhibition checklist, chronology, and selected one-person exhibitions. "… Though not exactly portraits, the girls in these drawings not only seem like real personalities—their character traits intensifying through developed accidents of line—but in many cases they actually originate in real girls Oldenburg does not know, whose faces, momentarily glimpsed coming towards him on a crowded pavement, have lodged in his memory. Kept vivid by the insistence of Oldenburg's fantasy, some of the faces in these drawings were transferred direct from such real 'en-counters' in (among other places) Kensington High Street, London, to these 'breathing' images made, on the spot, in his hotel room. Indeed almost all the erotic fantasy drawings were done in hotel rooms, their romantic and erotic character released by the suggestive situation of such a room, its sense of open, unrestricted possibility. That Oldenburg finds them difficult to do elsewhere, and impossible to produce to order (even in hotels), indicates how much closer to his feelings they are than is his work as a whole. Wholly spontaneous, they are not carefully constructed or formally contrived, but spring direct from a heightened state of imagination and are the visible evidence of a particular involuntary but focused energy. Many are failures and are destroyed. To be successful they have to operate on a knife edge between mechanical expertise and uncontrolled excess; their very production is analogous to sexual activity…"—Richard Morphet
