Teacup [Norton Family Christmas Project 2003 : Robert Lazzarini]

description

Multiple by Robert Lazzarini produced by the Peter Norton Family as their 2003 Christmas Project sent to friends and artworld colleagues. Comprised of a distorted teacup, saucer and spoon designed by Robert Lazzarini. "For the Christmas project, teacup, Lazzarini composited attributes of different cups and saucers to arrive at an archetypal object. In this case, he drew the cup and saucer using three dimensional modeling software. He also found a well proportioned spoon and laser scanned it directly into the computer. he then applied multiple sine wave patters along different axes through these virtual objects. Whereas the planar distortions of 'violin,'skull,' and other previous sculptures create a sort of friction between the object and space, the wave patterns in 'teacup' investigate a more fluid relationship between the two. The resulting sculpture evokes a mechanical, even weepy quality... He hand finished the prototypes, smoothing the surface and sculpting a chip in the rim of the cup to suggest years of use... Designed to be viewed from all angles,'teacup' becomes a visual anomaly placed among everyday items. It evokes the intimate, social moment of sharing a drink during an elusive yet warming tea party this holiday season." -- from the accompanying booklet.
