The New Five-Foot Shelf of Books : Memoir / Novel

description

"In 1910, Dr Eliot, a Harvard's professor, wrote an anthology which was meant to gather the whole literary knowledge, both classical and modern: the knowledge that every cultured american citizen should have. This anthology includes fifty volumes and takes up a five-foot shelf, hence the title 'The Five Foot Shelf of Books.' This anthology stood in my studio located on 611 Broadway in New York...We started the project in November 1998. We decided to reproduce exactly the esthetical form of this anthology, although we changed the content of it... The text of each page may appear as explanation of the chosen pages of the index. But throughout the 48 volumes, this text can be followed, or 'captured' by reading, one by one, sentences, pages or volumes. Per volume, only 4 signatures made of 8 pages are printed... From July 2001, we decided to publish the complete text in one single volume, in softcover, to make it affordable for most people. We gathered the manual of the 1910's 'The Five Foot Shelf Of Books' and the five chapters together. With support of the International Centre of Graphic Arts of Ljubljana, we published in June 2003 'The New Five Foot Shelf of Books,' presented for the first time during the Ljublijana Biennale." -- artist's statement.
