"(Natyurmort). A Russian word, derived from the French 'Nature morte.' Language preserves history; the history present in language shapes our ways of thinking. The presence, in Russian, of an art term of French origin fixes into language the French cultural influence on the Russian upper classes and Russian art. In a similar way, architecture makes material the beliefs and values of its builders; relationships of power and of control are made manifest in buildings. Social interactions are obviously determined by buildings, but even internal emotional and intellectual states are shaped by architectural arrangements. Buildings speak to us and we are forced to listen." -- artist's statement.
