Lawrence Weiner : NYC Manhole Covers

description

Artist's book / catalogue documenting public art project by Lawrence Weiner. "In 1999, the Public Art Fund invited Lawrence Weiner, a lifelong New Yorker, to create an artworkd for the city's public spaces. Almost immediately, Lawrence raised the possibibility of the urban manjole cover as a potential site. Simple, utilitarian and quintessentially New York, the Con Edison manhole cover is a ubiquitous yet unassuming articipant in the streetscape. Lawrence Weiner's nineteen manhole covers were installed in November 2000, the last permanently commissioned work in New York of the twentieth century. Enigmatically dropped in the ocean of the city's footprints, we hope that they will resonate with this generation and the next." -- Postscript by Susan K. Freeman and Tom Eccles.
