Naming Tokyo (Part II)

description

Poster published in conjunction with show "Naming Tokyo (Part II)," held at the Swiss Institute, New York, November 13 – December 20, 2003. Originally produced as a commission for Palais de Tokyo in Paris as part of the exhibition "GNS: Global Navigation System." For Part II Mir invited additional friends and artists to contribute street names. Contributions and text printed on the verso of the poster by Jean-Jacques Aillagon, Nina Hein, Paul Andrews, Sina Najafi, Sarah Gavlak, Alexandre Estrela, Andy Stillpass, Andrew Ross, Anne Collier, Annika Ström, Chris Holstad, Claude Closky, Craig Kalpakjian, David Ortega, Delia Gonzales, Eli Sudbrack, Gareth James, Gianni Jetzer, Gurvan Madec, Henrik Plenge Jakobsen, Ina Blom, Ingo Niermann, Jeremy Blake, Jeremy Deller, Jeffrey Vallance, Leif Elggren, Lucy McKenzie, Mara Mahía, Matthieu Laurette, Mika Hannula, Nicolas Bourriaud, Paola Pivi, Paul Noble, Philippe Jousse, Polly Staple, Raimundas Malasaukas, Ricci Albenda, Sigrún Hrólfsdóttir, Steve Lafreniere, Teresa Duncan, and Xavier Andrade. "The idea is based on the fact that Westerners often complain that Tokyo has no street names. So I felt it would be interesting to start naming the streets of Tokyo with words from Western culture and society, to help us around. Tokyo is large, so I asked my friends for help. In return and as thanks, they were promised a neighborhood named after themselves." -- Artist's statement.
