Essay by Kirk Varnedoe written shortly prior to his death, interview by Roberta Bernstein with Irving Blum. Includes Ferus Gallery chronology artist index, reproductions of the Gallery's posters and announcement as well as photographs by photographer and actor Dennis Hopper. Ferus, founded by the curatorial wizard Walter Hopps and artists Edward Kienholz (and later run by Irving Blum), book propositions that Ferus was one of the most important and influential galleries of the 20th Century. While gallery was short lived it spawned the careers of, or otherwise presented, artists John Altoon, Larry Bell, Billy Al Bengston, Wallace Berman, Bruce Conner, Joseph Cornell, Jay DeFeo, Richard Diebenkorn, Robert Irwin, Jasper Johns, Donald Judd, Craig Kauffman, Ellsworth Kelly, Ed Kienholz, Roy Lichtenstein, Ed Moses, Ken Price, Edward Ruscha, Kurt Schwitters, Hassel Smith, Frank Stella, and Andy Warhol.
