"This exhibition at Macy's - a first for New York - endeavors to reflect the three main aspects of the activity of the Galleria Schwarz. One room is dedicated to the Dadaist and Surrealist masters that Arturo Schwartz helped introduce in Italy: Arp, Drauner, Duchamp, Max Ernst, Farfa, Janco, Magritte, Martini, Picabia, Man Ray, Schwitters. Another room shows gallery artists: Adami, Arakawa, Arman, Baruchello, Berrocal, Brecht, Cavaliere, César, Colombo, Klapheck, Nespolo, Simonetti, and Spadari. The third room exhibits a selection of the graphics and multiples edited by the gallery over these last fifteen years. The Schwarz gallery started as an avantgarde publishing house. In April 1952, when he was twenty-eight years old, Arturo Schwarz started his activity in one of Milan's suburban backstreets. He soon won a name for himself printing texts by authors then almost unpublished in Italy - André Breton, Albert Einstein, Daniel Guérin, Pierre Naville, Benjamin Péret, Leon Trotsky - and monographs concerning the new cultural climate that developed in the post-war period. The young publisher's classical education (degrees in philosophy and the natural sciences), along with his activities as a Surrealist poet and writer, had, since 1944, predisposed him to an interest in the European avantgarde movements of the early nineteenhundreds. Schwarz has written some thirty books, the latest of which is 'The Complete Works of Marcel Duchamp,' Abrams, New York, 1969. He is mainly interested in the Dada and Surrealist movements. From 1954, first in the gallery-book-shop in Via Sant'Andrea, and then at number 17 in Via Gesù - where, in 1961, the bookshop became the Galleria Schwarz..." -- from book cover.
