description

Exhibition catalogue for show held April 1 - July 29, 2001. Public Offerings, curated by Paul Schimmel, presented breakthrough works by 25 young artists, all graduates of leading art schools in Los Angeles, New York, Berlin, London, and Tokyo. These works have had significant impact on the subsequent creative development of these artists as well as on their critical and creative reception. Representing the first moment of critical attention given to the artist and the individual work, the works allude to the impact of the artist's education and regional identity. The exhibition featured significant works from the late 1980s and early 1990s by Janine Antoni, Matthew Barney, Thomas Demand, Renée Green, Michael Joaquín Grey, Damien Hirst, Gary Hume, Toba Khedoori, Sharon Lockhart, Sarah Lucas, Steve McQueen, Takashi Murakami, Yoshitomo Nara, Chris Ofili, Laura Owens, Tsuyoshi Ozawa, Jorge Pardo, Manfred Pernice, Jason Rhoades, Yutaka Sone, Diana Thater, Rirkrit Tiravanija, Rachel Whiteread, and Jane and Louise Wilson.

This catalogue is guest-edited by University of Virginia assistant professor of art history Howard Singerman, author of Art Subjects: Making Artists in the American University, and designed by London's Jonathon Barnbrook, renowned for his innovative new typographies and use of color. The publication examines the relationship between art schools and the increasingly globalized art world and features essays by leading critics and art historians from each of the exhibition's key centers: Yilmaz Dziewior (Berlin), Midori Matsui (Tokyo), Lane Relyea (Los Angeles), Katy Siegel (New York), and Jon Thompson (London).
