Unbuilt Roads : 107 Unrealized Projects

description

Exhibition catalogue published in conjunction with show held in 1997. Editors Hans Ulrich Obrist and Guy Tortosa write in their introduction, "Unbuilt Roads," that "... endeavors in the visual arts that are planned but not carried out ordinarily remain unnoticed or little known. During the phase in which 'Unbuilt Roads' took shape we frequently asked ourselves why such a book had never been done before [...] There are many different reasons why the planned projects presented in 'Unbuilt Roads' have not been carried out. The following are some of the most representative variations : 1. Public commissions not fulfilled for political, technical or economics reasons. These include primarily projects that were postponed, censored or rejected for a variety of reasons as well as unrealized commissioned works or those that failed to win competitions. 2. 'Desk-drawer projects' developed by artists on their own without reference to a particular commission. Many of these planned undertakings were either forgotten or rejected by the artists themselves." Includes documentation of unrealized projects by Vito Acconci, Laurie Anderson, Siah Armajani, John Armleder, Lothar Baumgarten, Larry Bell, Guillaume Bijl, Dara Birnbaum, Alighiero Boetti, Christian Boltanski, Louise Bourgeois, Joan Brossa, Chris Burden, Daniel Buren, Cai Guo Qiang, Maurizio Cattelan, Dinos Chapman, Jake Chapman, Christo, Jean-Claude, Constant, Critical Art Ensemble, Stefan Demary, Erik Dietman, Jimmie Durham, Maria Eichhorn, Ayse Erkmen, Hans-Peter Feldmann, Peter Fend, Peter Fischli, David Weiss, Sylvie Fleury, Katharina Fritsch, Gautel / Karaindros, Frank O.
