Witness

Susan Hiller

description

Witness features stories of other-worldy sightings, as collected by Susan Hiller. Produced in conjunction with the installation of the same title, which was first presented from May 16 - June 25, 2000 at The Chapel in London. The original installation allowed viewers to hear the collected stories through a multitude of small speakers suspended from the ceiling. It traveled to the Tate Britain for the exhibit Intelligence: New British Art 2000, which ran between June 6 - September 24, 2000, and to the Havana Bienal during November and December of 2000. Book bound in die-cut aluminum binder. "People see strange things. Lights in the sky, mysterious phenomena, visions and visitations – things they can''t explain but know they saw. Susan Hiller has been collecting stories of these sighting for years. Some of them are prosaic and descriptive. Others are visionary and marvelling. All of them are facts. Hundreds of first hand witness accounts were brought together through years of research, and were incorporated in Susan Hiller''s ambitious sound installation. In Witness, Hiller invites us to explore the area where rational systems of explaining things no longer seem to hold. The publication, which is presented as the artist''s Witness research file, contains a large selection of the original witness statements, as well as a selection of Hiller''s personal notes, sketches and drawings on the work as it developed. To seduce the reader into envisaging the visions of others, the book comes with a selection of nearly 50 spoken statements on a CD." -- publisher''s statement.
