Richard Prince: Pre-Appropriation Works, 1971 - 1974

June 9 - September 17, 2010

Specific Object / David Platzker is pleased to announce the opening of the exhibition Richard Prince: Pre-Appropriation Works, 1971 - 1974. The exhibition will be on view at Specific Object from June 9 to September 17, 2010.

Richard Prince: Pre-Appropriation Works, 1971 - 1974 is an exploration of works on paper by Richard Prince executed between 1971 and 1974, plus two additional pieces from 1975.

While much of Prince's career post 1980 is well known, what has largely gone unseen have been works executed in the first four years of the 1970s at a time the artist was working out his skills and developing his own unique style. These works reveal Prince to be a skilled draftsman, an adept painter, printmaker, and, moreover, an artist beginning to work with language and texts which would become a hallmark of his production at the end of the 1970s.

Central to Richard Prince: Pre-Appropriation Works, 1971 - 1974 is the presentation of nine works that were previously included in the exhibition Fugitive Artist: The Early Work of Richard Prince, 1974-1977, curated by Michael Lobel, and presented at the Neuberger Museum of Art, Purchase College, State University of New York, in 2007. The catalogue for that exhibition will serve as the catalogue for this show, and can be purchased from Specific Object for $15 (plus postage) and can be ordered through our website at:
