Sale featured works from the Dia Art Foundation sold to raise an endowment for future display of work held by Foundation in New York City. From the catalogue introduction authored by "Board of Directors" of Dia Art Foundation:
The Dia Art foundation has distinguished itself in the field of Contemporary Art during the last 11 years since it formation [sic] in its two-fold activity of commissioning large environmental projects and building an extensive retrospective collection from a group of major living artists..."
Sale featured four major works by Warhol, four works by Twombly, three works by Judd, two works each by Andre, Chamberlain, Flavin, and Newman, and one work by Beuys, de Maria, Palermo [Peter Heisterkamp], and Sanback each.
