"These are drawings, works on paper. There are pencil marks on the paper, and a few words at the bottom of the page that are deliberately ambiguous. I have drawn estimations of locations where pitches in a baseball game cross the front plane of the strike zone, and what happens to those pitches. Someone who knows baseball would have a hard time disabusing him or herself of the thought that the drawings have nothing to do with baseball, since much of the notation I use in the drawings bears a strong correlation to one of the more common ways events in a baseball game are documented. Yet the object matter, to someone who knows nothing about baseball, may fit more neatly into the way a formalist would look at the work, leading to a discussion of line weight, color, shape, and so on. ...
