description

Heavy weight board with affixed color photograph, drawing and text by Peter Hutchinson announcing the opening of his exhibition at Holly Solomon Gallery, January 8, 1994.

"In playful collages, Peter Hutchinson mixes color photographs of luscious gardens with vistas of snowcapped mountains, using paint to cover the edges between the photographs. The fantastic landscapes that result have an impossible perfection, with the sensual foliage of Bermuda placed against the pristine beauty of the Alps, and cactuses tangled with snowy peaks.

These delightfully unreal scenes have the seductive allure of a tourist brochure, mixed with the steamy warmth of a greenhouse in winter. Mr. Hutchinson also shows two large installations, one of stumps of wood and empty water bottles, the other featuring plastic bags full of decaying bread strung along a rope, but they seem tame beside his sly collages."—Charles Hagen, "Art in Review," New York Times, February 4, 1994
