Le Corbusier : The City of Tomorrow

Le Corbusier, Frederick Etchells

description

"In the same way that Le Corbusier's Towards a New Architecture was the first presentation to the English public of the ideas behind the modern movement in architecture, this book, his second to be published in English, did pioneer work in expounded modern ideas of town and country planning. It was first published in Paris in 1924 under the title Urbanisme, and the first English edition was published in 1929, two years after Towards a New Architecture. Both these books are now historical documents of considerable importance, yet most of the ideas put forward in The City of To-morrow are as valid to-day as when they were written. Someo f the ideals set ou there have already been achieved, and Le Corbusier has thereby been proved a great architectural prophet; many of them remain ideals, and Le Corbusier remains one of the leading exponents of how the techniques of modern science should be applied to the improvement of our cities and countryside. The City of To-morrow has long been out of print. This new edition is an exact facsimile (slightly reduced in page size) of the first English edition (translated by Mr. Frederick Etchells), containing all the original illustrations chosen by Le Corbusier. It is thus uniform with the new edition of Towards a New Architecture published by the Architectural Press in March 1947." -- from interior flap. Printed in black-and-white.
