Capp Street Project : 1985 - 1986

Ann Hatch, Kathryn Brew

Capp Street Project : 1985 - 1986

description

Exhibition catalogue published in conjunction with shows held 1984 - 1986. The Capp Street Project began when Ann Hatch purchased 65 Capp Street, a house designed by artist David Ireland, and decided to use it as the site for a residency program and rotating exhibition space. The selected artists were given four months in the house, during which each produced, installed and exhibited a site-specific work. In her introduction, Hatch writes that "The history, the physical environment, sociology, and architecture are all viable points of departure for site-related art. Both the community and the artist are challenged to be conscious of many imperceptible elements when exploring a location creatively; the past, present and future all activate the domain. One artist's approach in relationship to a previous artist's treatment of the space provides a continuum and renewed sense of discovery." Artists include Robert Jones, Tony May, Barbara Kasten, Perry Hoberman, Maryanne Amacher, Paul Kos, Mary Lucier, Jane Greengold, and Howard Martin. By way of photographs and artists' statements, the catalogue documents the pieces produced between 1984 and 1986 Also includes biographies of the artists.
